Injury Severity Score (ISS) vs. ICD-derived Injury Severity Score (ICISS) in a patient population treated in a designated Hong Kong trauma centre

Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) has been the benchmark of mortality risk in trauma centers for over 30 years. TRISS utilizes the Injury Severity Score (ISS) as an index of anatomical injury. This study investigated the efficacy of a new type of index of anatomical injury called the ICD-derived Injury Severity Score (ICISS) compared to the ISS using a logistic regression analysis and a global chi-square test of the areas under the Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curves. We found that the empirically derived ICISS performed as well as the consensus derived ISS with no statistical differences between their respective area under the ROC curves

Can Collaborative Knowledge Building Promote Both Scientific Processes and Science Achievement?

This study investigated the role of collective knowledge building in promoting scientific inquiry and achievements among Hong Kong high-school chemistry students. The participants included 34 Grade 10 (15-16 years old) students who engaged in collective inquiry and progressive discourse, using Knowledge Forum@, a computer-supported learning environment. A comparison class of 35 students also participated in the study. The instructional design, premised on knowledge-building principles including epistemic agency, improvable ideas and community knowledge, consisted of several components: developing a collaborative classroom culture, engaging in problem-centered inquiry, deepening the knowledge-building discourse, and aligning assessment with collective learning. Quantitative findings show that the students in the knowledge-building classroom outperformed the comparison students in scientific understanding with sustained effects in public examination. Analyses of knowledge-building dynamics indicate that the students showed deeper engagement and inquiry over time. Students’ collaboration and inquiry on Knowledge Forum significantly predicted their scientific understanding, over and above the effects of their prior science achievement. Qualitative analyses suggest how student’s knowledge-creation discourse, involving explanatory inquiry, constructive use of information and theory revision,can scaffold scientific understanding

EXPLORATIVE VERSUS EXPLOITATIVE ALLIANCES—EVIDENCE FROM THE GLASS INDUSTRY IN CHINA

This study empirically delineates the nature of explorative and exploitative alliances, examines how they affect product and process innovations, and investigates how such effects vary in different contexts. Using a sample of 220 Chinese firms in the glass industry, we find that explorative alliances have a stronger effect on both product and process innovations than exploitative alliances. Product and process innovations are positively related to both market and efficiency performance and environmental turbulence enhances the effect of product and process innovations. Our findings provide implications on how to choose between explorative and exploitative alliances relative to the alliance objectives and firm resources and environmental contexts

Determinants of Innovative Activities: Evidence from Europe and Central Asia Region

Recent studies in the innovation literature reveal that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) promotes the innovation activities in the recipent country through spillover effects. In this paper we extend the existing literature by incooprating the corruption index in the estimation procedure. Using a cross-country analysis from the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region , covering 57 countries over the period of 1995-2010, we find no evidence of FDI spillover effect on innovative activity. However, corporate corruption and expenditure on education sector are positively related to the number of patents applications.
